The Women Who Rock Our World

As an accessories brand committed to putting people (and particularly women) at the forefront - whether designer, artisan or a woman wearing Nu Blvck - we wanted to mark International Women's Day by celebrating the women in our lives. So, on Wednesday on our Instagram (follow @nublvck) we posted a series of beautiful portraits taken by Glasgow-based photographer Kris Kesiak of some of the special women in our co-founder Becca's life. And then in the lead up to and for Mother's Day (26th March) we've continued the conversation with Becca, her mum Caroline and best friend Laura (herself a mum to Ethan, 1) and asked them to tell us about the women that they admire, that inspire and who they aspire to be like.

BECCA WEARS THE LARGE PJ SCARF IN RUST/GREY (£110)

THE WOMAN YOU WANTED TO BE WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE?

My older sister Nicola. I always wanted to be her and wear the same clothes as her (I still do).

THE WOMAN YOU MOST ADMIRE?

My gran (on my dad's side). Her life story is so inspiring - she was born and raised in Myanmar, Burma and fled during the second world war, leaving all of her family behind. Amazingly she's since been reunited with her sister (who's sadly now passed). She's 96 and is as feisty and independent as ever. Her life has led me to where I am and I focus every day on being as strong a woman as she is.

THE WOMAN WHOSE WARDROBE YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE?

Oh, Marion Cotillard. I love her (very French) style. Whether she's wearing classic Dior or a Breton shirt she just always looks amazing and very individual.

THE WOMAN YOU'D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH?

My friend Joanne. She moved to Beirut, Lebanon a few years ago to work in international development and she now lives in Amman, Jordan with her fiance. I miss having regular dinners with her where we'd talk for hours and hours and put the world to rights.

WHY DO YOU WEAR NU BLVCK?

First and foremost I love the design of Nu Blvck accessories. Whether I'm experimenting styling the PJ Scarves or running from meeting to meeting with my Form Backpack on, I love that they're completely individual and well made. But more than that I love the business that Andrew and I have created. Seeing people wearing Nu Blvck and collaborating with talented designers and artisans makes me very, very proud.

CAROLINE WEARS THE SMALL PJ SCARF IN NAVY/PINK (£75)

THE WOMAN YOU WANTED TO BE WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE?

My mum. She was beautiful, intelligent, warm, fun, patient and elegant. Making her own and my clothes on a tight budget with style and an eye for colour and detail.

THE WOMAN YOU MOST ADMIRE?

I would have to make that women, my daughters are inspirational. Intelligent and talented with caring natures and a spirit of adventure and can do attitude.

THE WOMAN WHOSE WARDROBE YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE?

My own. It reflects my eclectic style, from vintage to modern with a twist. Katherine Hepburn always looked good in dresses but also in a mannish suit, I love that. And at 60 I feel comfortable with my choices.

THE WOMAN YOU'D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH?

Well someone who can cook, knows her wines and writes a good book.  Prue Leith should fit the bill.

WHY YOU WEAR NU BLVCK?

Nu Blvck is ethical, exclusive, designed and made to order by talented designers and artisans. I love the whole concept of reducing waste and tackling the exploitation of workers. The products are beautiful and practical and I'm looking forward to seeing what's in the next collection.

LAURA WEARS THE RUST/GREY PJ SCARF IN GREY (£75)

THE WOMAN YOU WANTED TO BE WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE?

Princess Jasmine from Aladdin! Every little girl wanted to be a Princess, right? I loved her wit and independence. Plus, I LOVED her hair!

THE WOMAN YOU MOST ADMIRE?

Malala Yousafzai. An incredible, brave, intelligent and inspiring young woman.  To have the courage to stand up for what you believe in, in the face of such extremism and following the horror of a failed assassination attempt, and then to continue to work tirelessly to spread the message that Education is Power is simply awe inspiring.  Not to mention the fact that at 17 years old she became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize!  She motivates me to work harder at the things I believe in and to have the courage to raise my voice in the face of any injustices I may see.

THE WOMAN WHOSE WARDROBE YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE?

Ooh, it’s a toss-up between Emma Watson and Kate Middleton.

THE WOMAN YOU'D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH?

Audrey Hepburn. I really admire the work she did in film, fashion and her tireless humanitarian efforts as an ambassador for UNICEF.  I’d love to have a conversation with her and listen to her stories.

WHY YOU WEAR NU BLVCK?

I love owning and wearing something exclusively designed and handmade with the highest quality materials.  It makes me feel special.  It’s also very important to me to give my support to a business that is passionate about changing the world of fashion and supporting emerging designers and artisans in this country.
